Cerus Corporation is developing Intercept(TM) blood systems designed to enhance the safety of blood transfusions by inactivating pathogens in platelets, fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and red blood cells used for transfusion. The Intercept(TM) blood systems are being developed to target and inactivate blood-borne pathogens, such as hepatitis B and C, while leaving the therapeutic properties of the blood products intact. An estimated four million units of platelets, seven million units of FFP and 34 million units of red blood cells are transfused annually worldwide.

The Intercept(TM) systems are based on the company's Helinx(TM) technology, which prevents viral, bacterial and cellular replication. The Helinx(TM) technology has potential applications in the health care field beyond pathogen inactivation in blood components. Cerus has ongoing clinical trials of its Helinx(TM) technology in the field of stem cell transplantation to treat leukemia and other hematologic malignancies. Cerus Corporation is collaborating with the Fenwal Division of Baxter Healthcare Corporation to develop, manufacture and market the Intercept(TM) pathogen inactivation systems.
