Sepsis Awareness Month 2019

September is Sepsis Awareness Month!

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that is caused by a body's response to a serious infection.  An infection can be caused by many different sources including bacteria, viruses, fungus, or parasites stemming from bug bites, cuts, surgery, dental issues, pneumonia, transfusions, and other conditions and therapies. Given the right conditions, these can all potentially develop into sepsis. Sepsis is not always preventable, however, timely treatment can prevent or reduce serious complications including death.

A place to start is to learn to recognize the symptoms!

Cerus has developed several resources to help educate healthcare practitioners about some common symptoms of sepsis that can be commonly overlooked.

INTERCEPT™ Blood System for Platelets, pathogen reduction system is FDA approved as a means to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted infection, including sepsis, in transfused platelet components. Platelets that have been pathogen reduced with INTERCEPT are referred to as "psoralen-treated".
